1 Meqabyan
Originally written in Geʽez, the First Book of
Ethiopian Maccabees tells of Maccabeus
and his sons—Abijah, Shelah, and
Pantera—who resisted a tyrannical king’s
idol worship. It also features brothers
Judah, Meqabis, and Mebikyas revolting
against King Akrandis of Midian. Likely
composed in the high medieval period
(post-14th century), it highlights faith and
defiance against oppression. All three of the
Meqabyan books are considerably
different than the original Maccabean
books (composed in Greek).
